PDF is designed to preserve the appearance of a page; Word is built around editable document structures. Moving content between these formats is not a perfect inverse operation.
Selectable text versus scanned pages
If you can select and copy text from a PDF, extraction may work without OCR. A scanned PDF can be little more than an image of each page, requiring optical character recognition.
What OCR can and cannot do
OCR guesses characters from pixels. Scan quality, page skew and language affect accuracy. Even when recognition is successful, reconstructing columns, headings and tables is a separate challenge.
Why tables are difficult
A PDF may position each table cell independently. A converter must infer which fragments belong in which rows and columns. This can cause incorrect ordering or merged cells.
Before relying on the DOCX
- Review numbers, names and accented characters.
- Compare headings, tables and page breaks.
- Keep the original PDF for reference.
- Use the source Word document whenever it is available.
